Team: Pre-Medical Students from Baylor University

“Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,” Psalms 103:2-4 (NIV)
As we reflect on the trip to Colombia, the verse above echoes in our hearts. As a group of pre-medical students from Baylor University, we were prepared to see sickness and disease. However, our experience in Colombia far surpassed our expectations of what “serving” was like. We prayed with a young single mother as she battled hypertension and providing for her three children, we cried alongside a patient as we gave medication that was a month’s worth of savings, and we laughed and danced with children while blowing bubbles. The moments we experienced in Colombia were ones that will be treasured for the rest of our lives. They show the humanity in healthcare and how, through Christ, even the darkest situation can be conquered with love.
While we still stand in awe of the work that God is doing in Colombia through One More Child, we understand God is bringing physical healing as well as eternal healing. As a group, our goal was to act in love and compassion. We set up a clinic within the church and had the opportunity to engage with patients and the church community. Whether it was registering patients, taking vitals, or shadowing healthcare professionals, we were inspired by the life changing power of Christ through medicine. As we return to the United States, we know the medication we left will run out and the community will forget our names, but they will not forget what God did and is doing through One More Child. This trip was a reminder of who God is, what He is doing, and how, as future physicians, we can glorify Him by extending love and compassion to our patients.
