Following a presentation at her school, a young teenage girl approached one of our staff members once the classroom had cleared out.
With her head down and her eyes searching the floor, she said, “My mama gave me away. My mama gave me away for drugs.”
The teen shared that from ages 6-12 she had been sexually exploited to support her mom’s drug addiction.
She asked if the girls at The Porch Light Safe Home have endured similar experiences and our staff member nodded her head affirmatively.
It was in this moment the teenage girl looked up, locked eyes with our staff member and said, “I thought I was the only one.”
It was at that moment she recognized she has been trafficked by her mother and she didn’t have to be silent about her experiences.
The girl assured us she was now safe and Families (DCF) of her claims so they could provide proper assistance as needed.
