Every week, Mission Hill Church in Tampa, FL, opens its doors to care for those experiencing food insecurity, housing insecurity, or homelessness. They partner with ministries like One More Child’s Compassion Center to make that happen.
Equipped with meals, food, clothes, and resources from One More Child, Mission Hill serves a weekly hot meal, alongside a clothing closet and food pantry. This rhythm of care not only meets urgent hunger needs but draws them into something greater: community, resources, and the body of Christ.
For Sierra,* this hot meal ministry was a lifeline.
A single mom to young daughter Piper,* Sierra was trapped in a cycle of food insecurity. When she heard about this hot meal outreach, she breathed a sigh of relief — one less night to worry about how to feed her daughter.
Sierra and Piper kept coming back, and as they received meals and food supplied from One More Child’s Compassion Center, they encountered something else: the love of Jesus, taught and lived out by the people around them.
Moved by this love, Sierra and Piper began attending church on Sundays and women’s and children’s ministries. But then, just as Sierra started down a new path, she learned news she feared would derail everything — she was pregnant.
Fighting through sobs, Sierra confided in her new church community, sharing her fear and uncertainty. As a single mom still climbing out of food insecurity and instability, she felt at a loss for what to do.
Thankfully, Mission Hill knew One More Child could help, and referred her to our team. What we didn’t know at the time was that Sierra was considering abortion. She didn’t think she could care for and feed another child, and thought she had no other option.
After being referred to One More Child, Sierra was connected with the ongoing support she needed through tangible resources, professional guidance, and spiritual encouragement — and now saw another option: life for her child.
Today, Sierra, Piper, and new baby Carter* are thriving. Food insecurity is no longer their daily reality. The cycle that once defined their lives was broken— not by chance, but by a community that showed up, a ministry that was equipped, and a God that is faithful.
Sierra’s story is just one example of the thousands of lives changed through One More Child’s partnership with churches to provide food and tangible resources each year, opening doors for eternal transformation — one meal at a time.
