How ONE HOME Became the Seed of a Family’s Restoration

During One More Child mission trips, the teams often get the opportunity to participate in home visits of the families we serve. These visits are some of the most meaningful moments in our global ministry—filled with laughter, learning, and powerful stories. On a recent mission trip in the Dominican Republic, we met a young couple, Lois and Mira, whose story deeply touched our hearts.

Their journey is a powerful reminder of what happens when a family is given not just shelter—but support, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.

ONE Father's Painful Choice

Like many fathers in rural communities, Lois once faced an agonizing decision: stay with his family and struggle to find work—or leave them behind in search of income.

He chose the latter, taking a job in a large garment factory far from home. For two years, he sewed clothing, sending money back to support Mira and their children. The job provided financial relief—but at a cost. He missed birthdays, bedtime stories, and the opportunity to be a present father with his children.

Yet even in that difficult season, God planted a dream in his heart: What if he could stay with his family and build something lasting right where they lived?

ONE New Beginning

That dream began to grow when Lois and Mira received a house through One More Child. For them, it wasn’t just a roof and four walls—it was a foundation for a new future.

Encouraged by their local pastor and supported by our ministry team, Lois stepped out in faith. With a small loan, he bought a sewing machine to make clothing and support his family. Then he decided to expand his idea and began training others.

Lois started with his wife Mira, teaching her the skills he had learned, and then brought in his brother, and soon, a few others from the community. What began as a small, home-based project slowly transformed into a garment subcontracting business—right there in their village.

Today, Lois isn’t just sewing clothes. He is supporting his family with dignity and creating jobs in his community. Because he stayed, now other fathers can too.

ONE Family Restored

While visiting their home, Lois proudly demonstrated his work—meticulously sewing a pair of shorts. Mira stood beside him, sharp-eyed and steady, inspecting each piece for loose threads and flaws—she’s now the quality controller for their small business.

Their teamwork was inspiring—but what moved us most was the pride radiating from their children. You could feel the love that envelops their home. When we told Lois how inspiring his story was, he smiled humbly. His small act of courage was now bearing fruit beyond anything he imagined. He knew his decision to return home was changing more than just his own life—it was creating ripples of hope for others. Lois’s journey is a living testimony to what’s possible when a father is given the tools and support to stay:

  • Dignity is restored
  • Community is strengthened
  • The Church is blessed
  • Hope is multiplied

And it all started with one home— made possible through the generosity of people like you.

YOUR SUPPORT Plants Seeds of Hope

Every gift helps families like Lois and Mira’s experience restoration. Because of your support, a father came home, a family was strengthened, and a community began to flourish. As we walked away from their home, we carried this truth with us: When a father stays, everything changes.

Thank you for planting seeds of hope—one home, one family, one father at a time.
