Mission Update from One More Child

Every week, the leadership and staff of One More Child come together for prayer and devotion to celebrate the encouraging progress in our ongoing mission to serve vulnerable children and struggling families, all for the glory of God.

September is Hunger Action Month—so this month’s good news relates to the part of our mission that seeks to feed hungry children. Here is a glimpse into the recent good news, activities, and accomplishments at One More Child:

Give Mor Chikin

In preparation for the new school year, One More Child held a back-to-school event at our Houston location, providing families with supplies, resources, and encouragement. In addition to the resources provided by One More Child, Chick-fil-A and Bubba and Cindy Cathy generously donated meals, making the event even more special for the families. We served 800 Chick-fil-A meals, feeding every guest and reaching additional children and families in need in the community.

In Houston, 31% of children live in low-income households, and 36% of children live in a single-parent home. Through One More Child’s Houston Family Resource Center, we work directly with at-risk families, providing comprehensive services that encompass tangible, professional, emotional, and spiritual support.  This includes parenting workshops, mentorship, career guidance, and life skills training designed to help families build long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

This back-to-school event provided a valuable outreach opportunity, as well as an opportunity to meet immediate needs and equip families for a successful school year. Thank you, Chick-fil-A, for your generosity and partnership in serving one more child!

Back to Backpack Meals

With school back in session, many families facing food insecurity will be able to rely on free or reduced lunches to ensure their children have food to eat during the school day. The same cannot be said over the weekend. While some children go home on Fridays looking forward to spending the weekend playing and having fun, others go home worried they will go hungry. That’s where our Backpack Meals come in.

Backpack Meals are unassuming bags of food placed in the backpacks of children facing food insecurity to ensure they won’t go hungry over the weekend. We work with churches, community organizations, and businesses to sponsor schools and host Backpack Meal packing events to accomplish this initiative.

Recently, we partnered with the Lakeland Sunrise Notary Club to host a Backpack Meal event. Volunteers wrote encouraging notes to be included in each bag, and in total packed 715 bags with more than 5,000 meals. We are so grateful for partners who join us to care for vulnerable children in their community. Learn more about Backpack Meals, including how you can adopt a school or host an event.

Partners Providing Meals

For the sixth consecutive year, nearly 400 students from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor gathered to pack meals for children in need in the Belton Independent School District in Texas. At this One More Child Backpack Meal packing event, students assembled bags of food that provide meals for children on weekends. They also added heartfelt notes of encouragement to each bag.

H-E-B generously donated all the food for this Backpack Meal event, donating more this year than the grocery company has ever before. H-E-B has been a valued and vital partner of One More Child in the ongoing effort to end child hunger in the state of Texas.

After the meals were packed and boxed up, another partner, AME Movers, transported the meals to the local schools, ensuring the meals are delivered safely and efficiently to the community.

Multiple community partners—the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, H-E-B, and AME Movers—came together to make this event possible. Together, we are fighting child hunger and meeting the needs of local communities.
