Immeasurably More

Foster care is a big responsibility. When children enter foster care, they need support, compassion, and understanding.

With this responsibility, some may believe they are too inexperienced or unprepared to serve as foster parents—but amid this unease, we encourage all those who are in Christ to recall what Ephesians 3:20 reminds us:

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…”

Ephesians 3:20 (NIV)

Again and again in Scripture, we see Jesus call ordinary people to do extraordinary things—not of their own power—but through the power of the Lord at work within us. This same power of the Lord at work through the Holy Spirit is what can equip “ordinary people” to become foster parents and make an eternal impact in the lives of vulnerable children.

At One More Child, we seek to educate, equip, and empower families to get involved in foster care. We offer trainings, tangible resources, counseling and guidance, licensing, and wraparound support to families interested or involved in foster care.

God calls His people to care for the vulnerable. Even when we feel inadequate, we can trust in the One who is able to do immeasurably more.

One Family’s Foster Care Journey

Justin and Amber Callaham felt God calling them to foster. Initially they felt unqualified, but they quickly learned how God emboldens and equips those who place their trust in Him to do His will.

Justin and Amber are licensed foster parents with One More Child and their story was recently featured in Heartland Living Magazine. This piece1, written by Rebecca Maglischo, describes the Callaham family’s journey through foster care and how, through this journey, they have witnessed God’s faithfulness.

Here is an excerpt that beautifully portrays key parts of their story with foster care:

“[Amber] had served as a counselor working for Title 1 schools and worked with children whose circumstances were extremely challenging—a lot of them. She also saw that, all too often, it was difficult to find people willing to step in and advocate for these children.

The need to help fill this gap continued to tug at her heart. When a good friend began fostering a child, the Callahams witnessed the experience and walked alongside their friends. “I always thought ‘special’ people foster children,” Amber says. “But when my friend stepped up, I realized that fostering was something we could do.”

Fostering is not an extraordinary decision,” [Justin] insists. “It is a sequence of small, day-in and day-out decisions in favor of a child that needs a little help.”

“The actions of foster families are small daily sacrifices repeated in an effort to impact one child, one parent, one family, but the impact is far greater. When a biological mother of five children can turn her life around because of the support of the foster system, the effects are generational—five children that can come from a better story, more equipped to care for their own children. This becomes something handed down from generation to generation, a legacy of community, kindness, care and the true meaning of unconditional love.”

This selection of quotes is just a snapshot of the Callaham’s foster care journey, which has included welcoming two foster children, Amiah and ‘Baby Z,’ into their home.
