Most 1-year-olds are learning to walk and talk, experiencing the world in a new way with their whole lives ahead of them—but this was not the case for Wilbur. At one year old, Wilbur was severely malnourished and on the brink of death.

When a One More Child mission team visited Wilbur’s town in Uganda, our team immediately recognized the dire situation and sprang into action. Pam, a mission team member and former pediatric nurse, along with a team of social workers began providing emergency care to save his life.

Thankfully, Wilbur received the medical care in time and recovered from the malnutrition.

But the team wanted to ensure Wilbur would have the care and resources he needed going forward. Pam recognized that Wilbur was very small for his age and not developing as a normal one year old should. He was being raised by a struggling grandmother who did her best but couldn’t always make ends meet.

Because of this, emergency care turned into full-time sponsorship. Wilbur joined our Child Sponsorship program, and his needs have been met ever since.

Today, Wilbur is a thriving first grader attending school in Uganda. He is smart, eager to help others, and hardworking. Looking at this bubbling, bright young boy you would never guess his life began as it did.

One More Child’s Uganda ministry and Child Sponsorship program not only saved Wilbur’s life, but established him on a stable path, filled with hope, possibility, and joy.
