So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 1 Corinthians 12: 24-26 (NLT)

As a single mother living in Colombia, Yolanda worked hard to provide for her children and ensure they grow up in a loving home despite struggling through extreme poverty. But recently, she experienced one of every parent’s greatest fears.

Yolanda’s 2-year-old daughter Salomé started to exhibit an unusual and concerning symptom. Her body began swelling in an incomprehensible way, initially starting with her eyes. Yolanda brought Salomé into the doctor twice, desperate for her daughter to receive care, but both times they sent her home thinking it was a minor irritation or insect bite. However, when the swelling continued to spread throughout her body, Yolanda knew this was not just a minor condition that would go away in time. She brought her in again, and this time, they referred her to a high-level hospital.

This resulted in a multi-day hospital stay, as doctors sought to control Salomé’s swelling and determine the cause. These days were agony for Yolanda, as her young daughter fought through a scary medical situation, and she still had to care for her other children while in the hospital.

But thankfully, during this painful time, the Church was there for Yolanda and Salomé.

The local church engaged in constant prayer over Salomé’s health, and several church members visited the hospital, attentive to the family’s needs. During this time, One More Child’s partner also met Yolanda’s urgent physical needs with the provision of food through our sponsorship program. This physical, emotional, and spiritual support supplied Yolanda with the strength she needed to get through this painful time.

When Salomé returned home, she continued her medication and monitoring for further signs of complications. The local church and One More Child will continue to support Yolanda as a single mother with multiple children, one of which had more intense medical needs for a time. Our ministry exists to support vulnerable children and struggling families, so they do not have to endure their hardships alone and have hope for a brighter future.
