Hunger is a global problem, affecting over 148 million children who experience chronic malnourishment (UNICEF). Millions grow up without enough nutritious food to support healthy growth and development, and the effects ripple through families and communities. On May 28, World Hunger Day, we highlight how One More Child is not only feeding children but transforming lives around the globe.

Malnutrition in Guatemala

Nearly 1 in 2

children under age 5 experience chronic malnutrition in Guatemala.

Guatemala faces one of the most severe malnutrition crises in the world. With nearly 1 in 2 children under age 5 experiencing chronic malnutrition (World Bank, 2024), families often struggle to provide the nutrition needed for their children to thrive. In response, One More Child is taking action to fight child hunger around the globe by empowering families to lead healthy lives.

In Guatemala, we recently provided specialized trainings on nutrition and vaccines for mothers. A nutritionist shares the importance of balanced meals, healthy food groups, and practical menu ideas. By equipping parents with this knowledge, the program goes beyond simply providing food to creating and sustaining healthy habits, benefiting generations to come.

Our Feeding Program Around the Globe

Take Kelisha, a bright 5-year-old who was part of the Baby Feeding program in Haiti. Before receiving support, her family struggled to provide regular, nutritious meals, which affected her health and ability to learn. Today, Kelisha thrives in preschool—curious, lively, and affectionate. Her parents say the program has been a blessing. They can now cling to hope and see a brighter future for their daughter.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

In South Asia, life in a crowded slum can be harsh and unforgiving. Ayaan*, the eldest of three siblings, faced daily challenges from poverty and the pressures of street life. When he joined our Day Care and Feeding program, he began learning more than academics. Through love, nutritious meals, and mentorship, Ayaan discovered kindness, honesty, and the wisdom to choose right over wrong. One day, when peer pressure tempted him toward harmful choices, he stood firm, applying the lessons he learned in the program. And his parents witnessed the remarkable transformation. His father, hardened by the daily struggles, sat quietly, tears welling in his eyes. His mother smiled and said softly, “Today, I see God’s hand on our son’s life.” That night, something changed in their home. There was a new peace, a sense of pride, and a deep gratitude.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Proverbs 1:7a (NIV)

Even closer to home, stories like Shirley’s, a mother in Costa Rica, remind us that the ripple effects of feeding programs extend beyond children. Shirley initially came to the dining room at one of our partner ministries to get meals with her two children. Soon, she began helping in the kitchen, then attending church, and now her whole family is actively engaged in the church and community. Our feeding program not only nourished her family physically, it also drew them into a deeper journey of faith, purpose, and connection.

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 (NIV)

From Guatemala to Haiti, South Asia, and beyond, One More Child is proving that fighting child hunger is about more than just food. Every meal serves as a doorway to education, mentorship, health, and lasting transformation.

This World Hunger Day, you can make a difference. By sponsoring a child or giving to One More Child, you’re joining a global effort to feed hungry children, strengthen families, and transform futures.
