When It Becomes Too Overwhelming

In today’s fast-paced world, parenting can be demanding and sometimes overwhelming. From the moment a child is born, parents provide not only for their little one’s physical needs but also for their emotional and developmental growth. Then, suddenly, that child becomes a teenager, and a whole new set of challenges emerges, requiring the same resilience and love.

Today’s circumstances do not set every family up for success. In fact, there are many vulnerable children and struggling families who need help. You can partner with One More Child to help a family in need.

Helping Families Get Stronger

Our Family Support Program provides prevention services that make families stronger before the child welfare system intervenes and families are torn apart. One More Child provides evidence-based interventions, parenting workshops, and comprehensive support services. The program is designed for parents and caregivers striving to create a safe, structured, and sustainable environment for their children.

We aim to comprehensively meet the needs of our families, including tangible needs like food, household items, and more, as well as provide educational resources, classes and workshops, spiritual mentoring, and more.

Mary's Story

Happy mother giving son a piggyback ride on her shoulders in park. African woman carrying his boy on her shoulders while walking in a park.

Mary* initially joined One More Child’s Family Support program hesitantly, unsure how much it could help her family. Living with an unsupportive partner and her two teenage daughters, Mary felt ashamed to seek assistance. But she recognized the need for a positive change in their lives. As a wrap-around client in the Family Support program, she could develop parenting skills and find resources for her family.

Working with her coach, Mary quickly achieved her goals of completing nursing certificates and making friends. At One More Child’s parent cafés, an outlet for parents and caregivers of young children, she gathered support and shared her story, experience, concerns, and insights.

One weekend, her life dramatically shifted when she became a survivor of domestic violence. Mary returned to One More Child the following Monday with little to her name.

In addition to the physical abuse she experienced, her partner had taken everything from their home – including her daughter’s bed and all the food.

She was distraught, but her One More Child’s Family Support community greeted her with open arms. Her coach, warehouse staff, and volunteers rallied to gather food, furniture, clothes, and other essentials to rebuild her life.

Mary has now graduated to the Everyday Parenting program, a long-term, evidence-based curriculum offered by Family Support. Now, she feels empowered whenever she steps through the organization’s doors. With One More Child’s care, she has discovered the strength to keep herself and her daughters safe, well-fed, and comfortable. Actively participating in individual sessions and engaging in group events, Mary supports fellow clients facing challenges.

Through One More Child’s Family Support program, Mary found the crucial assistance she needed when she needed it the most, helping her and her family navigate difficult circumstances and find hope for their future.
