One More Child featured on ABC11 News

As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, ABC11 News in Raleigh-Durham has turned the spotlight on One More Child’s advocacy in the critical fight against modern-day slavery.

WTVD Reporter DeJuan Hoggard called attention to North Carolina’s status among the top 10 states for this heinous crime, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline.

Hoggard’s reporting underscores the significance of advocacy organizations like One More Child. Advocates address the pervasive dangers, bridge gaps, and provide essential support to survivors. Most critically, some survivors may not be aware of their victimization.

One More Child Advocate Shoni Sconyers passionately spoke to the outlet about reminding survivors of their dignity and worth. Explaining how to make inroads with survivors, Sconyers said, “Remind people through the experiences that they’ve had, that another experience can be better.”

Several crucial goals of One More Child’s Anti-Trafficking program include:

  • Create a Safe Haven: Establish a secure and supportive environment for survivors of sex trafficking, fostering healing from trauma and helping them rediscover their intrinsic worth and purpose.
  • Collaborate in Coordinated Care: Work closely with dedicated anti-trafficking leaders and law enforcement, actively participating in a network of care that swiftly responds when potential survivors are identified.
  • Comprehensive Support: Conduct thorough assessments of victims’ needs, facilitate connections to essential community resources, deliver clinical services, and offer mentorship using a trauma-informed approach.
  • Holistic Well-being: Prioritize holistic care by addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual facets of survivors’ well-being.

By fighting for victims, One More Child contributes to the pursuit of justice, a sentiment echoed by U.S. Attorney Michael Easley. The top-ranking federal law enforcement official in the Eastern District of North Carolina emphasized the emotional but rewarding journey of obtaining judgments on behalf of those who have been victimized.
