Building Stronger Families, One Step at a Time

When Maya* found herself caring for four children—including her nephew whom she had gained legal custody of due to her brother being unable to care for his son—she faced significant challenges. Maya was trying to make ends meet by working pick-up temporary jobs during a time when she was between full-time employment, creating a precarious financial situation for her growing family.

One More Child Family Support connects families with essential resources and services they need to thrive during challenging times. The program works individually with each family, creating personalized support plans that reduce stress, strengthen parent-child relationships, and establish vital connections to community resources.

Maya's Journey to Stability

When Maya first connected with the Tampa Family Support program, she needed extra assistance looking after her four children while working temporary jobs. The program responded by providing tangible goods such as food boxes, diapers, baby wipes, and essential household items—creating immediate relief during this financially stressful period.

Once Maya successfully gained stable employment, a new set of challenges emerged. She needed additional support until she could generate sufficient income to adequately provide for her family. This critical transition period is when many families can fall back into crisis without proper support.

The Family Support Program recognized this vulnerable time and connected Maya to the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County resources to:

  • Get her vehicle repaired so she could reliably commute to and from work
  • Obtain uniform items required for her new job
  • Arrange after-school childcare as she was just starting her new position

From Receiving Help to Giving Back

Additionally, Maya participated in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) parent trainings, learning new skills that she was able to immediately apply as a parent. These evidence-based strategies enriched her relationship with her children and strengthened her parenting toolkit during a time of significant family transition.

Through this comprehensive support approach, Maya developed a sense of autonomy and self-sufficiency in caring for her family. The assistance her family received from the Family Support program has given her new hope and resilience.

Perhaps most powerfully, Maya has shared that because her family is now doing well, she’s been able to assist another sibling and their family during a difficult time—creating a beautiful ripple effect of support throughout her extended family.
