During a home visit on a mission trip to Costa Rica, a One More Child missions team member learned Teresa, the mother of a child in our Sponsorship program had a long-untreated thyroid nodule causing breathing difficulties. Concerned for her well-being, the team member covered the cost of Teresa’s initial medical exam, and One More Child reached out to the child’s sponsor for prayer support. When the sponsor learned of the urgent need for an expensive surgery, they promptly rallied support from their network of friends and family to fundraise for the cost.
But Teresa’s health was also compromised for a different reason– she had endured years of physical abuse from her husband, Roberto. Understanding that resolving this issue was just as vital to her well-being, One More Child partners in Costa Rica, a psychologist and social worker, met with Teresa and Roberto to address the issue and identify means of support.
Finding Emotional and Physical Healing
During this tense meeting, one of our partners felt God showing her that Roberto was a vulnerable child who had, himself, suffered trauma. Upon reassuring Roberto that not only she, but God sees his struggle our partner offered help to break the patterns of Roberto’s own upbringing.
Roberto broke down in tears and expressed a desire to change. He accepted counseling and behavior modification, motivated by the intention to set a better example for his sons. One More Child is thankful to God for the positive turn of events.
Teresa’s surgery, though challenging, ultimately proved successful. We offer praise to God for the healing provided by the generosity of her sponsor and family. Our prayers continue to focus on physical and spiritual healing within their family.
