Tragically, malnourishment is a common problem among families living in impoverished conditions in Uganda. Many children silently struggle to survive until someone sees them in their suffering and chooses to intervene.
This is Babirye’s story.
At 9 years old, Babirye Bushira has experienced more pain and hardship than many people do in their lifetime. She was born into a polygamous family, in which the father often abandoned those he was supposed to care for. There was no hope for attending school, and oftentimes, they lacked sufficient food, which led to the children becoming malnourished.
After a team of social workers examined Babirye at a hospital, they referred the family to One More Child’s ministry in Uganda. Our team was able to put Babirye on a special feeding program to boost her immune system and diet, likely saving her life.
This was only the beginning of Babirye’s transformation.
After meeting Babirye’s immediate nutritional needs, the team worked to get her in our Child Sponsorship program to ensure a steady supply of food. This brought hope and stability to her life.
However, amid newfound hope, Babirye experienced an awful motorbike accident that brought more calamity to her life. She broke her leg and, due the severity of the injury, almost lost her leg. She is now recovering at home from this shocking accident.

Although this tragedy brings much grief, Babirye still finds joy in the support she receives from One More Child’s ministry. The Child Sponsorship program was able to provide the funds needed for her hospital treatment and support her recovery process.
Babirye has endured immense burdens of suffering and pain for a young girl—yet she finds hope and comfort through One More Child’s ministry. God is able to bring light even to the darkest of circumstances—and he invites us to be a part of His great work of redemption.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5 (NIV)
