Today, on Good Friday, as we remember the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, we invite you to read this lesson with your family. This lesson comes from Maker’s Box: The One Who Calms.

Good Friday: Peace with God

Can the worst day in history actually turn out to be the best? Absolutely. Good Friday was a horrific day because the sinless Son of God died a brutal death, taking on the weight of the world’s sin. Yet it was the best day because it brought a resolution to our biggest need: peace with God.
Ultimately, humans lack peace in their lives because they are separated from the One who gives peace. This separation between people and God exists because of a little word called “sin.” Sin is when we do and say things that aren’t pleasing to God. Sin is when we want to go our own way and not God’s way. Our sin is our way of rejecting God as God.
It all began in the Garden of Eden when humans decided they didn’t want to live dependent on God. They wanted to be independent. As a result, we are born enemies of God. So, by nature we are not at peace with God.
Here’s where we come to the “good” in Good Friday. God sent Jesus to take the punishment of our sin so that we could have peace with God.
Romans 5:1 (ESV) says, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Jesus came to earth to bring peace between God and people. This peace with God that comes through faith in Jesus is called salvation. Salvation is what happens when a person turns from their life without God and accepts Jesus as their Savior. This gift of salvation gives us a peace with God that lasts forever. Our separation from God is over and our relationship is restored, bringing blissful PEACE!
Even when Jesus was born, the good news of peace was clear. The angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, goodwill to man.” The promise that Jesus would bring peace was the best news imaginable because the world is broken and lacking peace. People lack peace, families lack peace, and countries lack peace. All that hopelessness turned a corner on Good Friday.
Peace with God gives us great hope for the future and puts a peace in our hearts like nothing else! So even when life is “crazy” and painful down here on earth, we can rest in the fact that one day all pain, hurt, sickness, and evil will end when we are in heaven. No matter what happens to us, we have this peace with God that is secure. It is a reality that will never change for all eternity, forever and ever into the future.
A prayer for Good Friday: “Thank you, Lord, that our rescue came about because of Good Friday. The worst day became the best day! Thank you for the cross so that we could have peace with You. Amen.”
