New York City, located in the Northeast of the United States, is the most densely populated city in the country with a population of over 8 million. Often referred to as ‘the city that never sleeps’, it is known for its many skyscrapers like the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the broadway theatre in Times Square. Holding major financial, commercial, and cultural power, it can easily be considered the world’s capital.
However, there are many challenges as 18% of New York residents live in poverty. A lack of affordable housing has caused a significant increase in homelessness within recent years. 1.2 million people in New York City are food insecure, making up 50% of food insecure people across New York state. Additionally, the average meal cost is twice as high as the national average of $3.25. (New York City Council, 2023) Go on a mission trip to New York City!
MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES IN NEW YORK CITY
Teams on a mission trip to New York City have the opportunity to play a part in the holistic and comprehensive outreach programs. Opportunities for mission teams may include:
- Assist in packing boxes for families in the local community for food distribution day.
- Participate in community prayer walk in the Red Hook neighborhood, Brooklyn Borough.
- Host Community Cookout & Education Day through Redemption Church.
- Serve foster families and single moms.
- Host August Back-to-School kickoff backpack drive.
- Potential maintenance and construction around campus.
